Migraine and coronary heart disease

A recent population-based study reported that women suffering from migraine with aura have an increased risk of developing acute coronary heart disease (CHD) – a finding not confirmed in women with migraine without aura. The authors of this study sought to confirm this association in an Australian population-based cohort of men and women (n = 2,331) aged 49 to 97 years. The diagnosis of migraine with and without aura was based on face-to-face interviews using the current International Headache Society diagnostic criteria. Over a mean 6-year follow-up, 30 women (2.8%) and 30 men (4.4%) without any prior CHD died of CHD-related causes. In the women who died of CHD, the association between this condition and a history of migraine with aura was non-significant and the risk rates remained similar after adjustment for cardiovascular risk factors. The results of this prospective cohort study do not support reports of an increased risk of CHD in women who suffer from migraine versus women who don't.
