Summary of relevant expertise
The Pavia Headache Center is one of the oldest in the world, as it has a 30-year long experience in the investigation, diagnosis and treatment of headache patients. Since 1989, the Pavia Headache Center has been flanked and integrated by the University Center for the Study of Adaptive Disorders and Headache, which has provided a multidisciplinary academic expertise for the research in the field of headache and pain disorders. Every year, more than 2000 headache patients are visited as out-patients, and almost 300 are hospitalized for the proper treatment of analgesic abuse for headache. At the Neurological Institute C. Mondino, clinical research in the field of headache and pain is fully integrated with basic research. Here clinical trials, human neurophysiological and neuroendocrine investigations coexist with basic experimental studies on animal models of central pain, hyperalgesia and migraine. Several clinical and experimental laboratories active in the field of headache and pain, including Psychophysiology of Pain, Neuroendocrinology, Functional Neurochemistry, and Pathophysiology of Autonomic Integrative Systems.
